European Wasps in Bendigo: Nests, Stings and Safe Removal

The European wasp is the most aggressive stinging insect in Central Victoria, and Bendigo is firmly inside its territory. Unlike a bee, a European wasp can sting repeatedly, recruits nest-mates when threatened, and builds colonies that can reach several thousand insects by late summer. Treating a nest yourself is the single most common way locals end up in the emergency department for stings.

How to recognise them

Bright yellow and black with clearly defined bands, black antennae and a quick, darting flight. They’re drawn to meat, pet food, sweet drinks and fallen fruit — which is why they crash barbecues from January onward. If you’re seeing steady wasp traffic in your yard, watch the flight line: workers fly directly to and from the nest, and that line points you to it.

Where nests hide in Bendigo properties

European wasps prefer concealed cavities: in the ground (especially garden beds and embankments), retaining walls, wall cavities, under decking, in compost areas and inside sheds. A nest the size of a football in February may have started as a golf ball in October. Ground nests are particularly dangerous for kids and pets, and for anyone mowing over one.

Why nest treatment is professional work

Disturbing a nest without the right equipment triggers a mass defensive response — wasps release an alarm pheromone that marks you as the target. Professional wasp nest treatment uses protective equipment and products applied directly into the nest entrance, eliminating the colony including the queen, usually within 24 hours. If the nest is accessible, it’s removed afterwards. Never block a nest entrance: wasps will chew through plaster into your living room rather than die in the wall.

Frequently asked questions

When are European wasps worst in Bendigo?

Colonies peak from late January through April. In mild winters some Bendigo nests survive and continue growing into a second season, becoming unusually large and aggressive — another reason not to leave a known nest untreated.

I can see wasps but not the nest — can you still help?

Yes. Tracking flight lines to a concealed nest is a standard part of the job. If the nest is on a neighbouring property we will let you know, and treating at the source is always more effective than spraying foraging wasps.

Are the treatments safe for pets?

Yes — treatments are applied directly into the nest cavity, not broadcast across your yard. We will give you simple, clear guidance on keeping pets clear of the area for a short period after treatment.
