Wasp work is about doing one thing calmly and completely rather than quickly. The nest is identified, approached properly and treated at the point the colony actually uses.
European wasp, paper wasp and honey bee all get very different responses. Honey bees are pollinators rather than pests — where it can be done, a swarm is referred to a local beekeeper instead of treated.
What you see flying is traffic. The treatment goes where that traffic disappears — a hole in the lawn, a gap in the brickwork, a weep hole or a gap under the eaves.
Applied at the entrance in full protective equipment, timed for when the colony is home, so the treatment reaches the whole nest rather than the guards on the outside.

Where Bendigo wasp nests turn up
European wasps will nest anywhere sheltered, dry and undisturbed. Three locations account for most of the calls, and each one changes how the nest is approached.
The classic European wasp nest — in lawns, garden beds, embankments and behind retaining walls. Often the first sign is a steady stream of wasps disappearing into a single hole in the grass.
A gap in the brickwork, an unscreened weep hole or a lifted roof tile is all the access a colony needs. In most cases these are treated through the entry point without opening the wall.
Exposed nests under eaves, in carports, sheds and pergola beams. These are the ones people walk under for weeks without noticing until the colony is large.

Why shouldn’t I treat a wasp nest myself?+
Because the failure mode is being stung dozens of times in seconds. Supermarket aerosols rarely reach past the entrance, so the colony survives, is now alerted, and the person holding the can is standing in front of it without protection.
The nest is in a wall cavity — can you still treat it?+
Yes, in most cases through the entry point without opening the wall. The wasps carry the treatment inward for you, which is exactly why the entry point is the right target.
How do I tell a European wasp from a bee?+
A European wasp is bright yellow and black, smooth rather than furry, and tucks its legs in when it flies. A honey bee looks fuzzy and browner and trails its legs. If you are not sure, describe it on the phone rather than getting close for a better look.
Will the wasps come back?+
The treated colony will not. New queens can establish elsewhere on a property in a later season, so you will get guidance on the early signs that a new nest is being built.
What should I do until the nest is treated?+
Keep people and pets away from the entry point, avoid mowing or working near it, and leave it alone at dusk when the whole colony is home. Do not block the hole — a sealed nest often finds a second way out, sometimes into the house.
